I think words create a sense of identity. They are used in a certain manner that makes the listener, viewer or even reader feel different emotions when phrased in different ways. Words are phrased to best suit someone, whether it is persuasive or inspiring, they are phrased to represent you.
The best way that I think these are represented are through songs. Songs all include lyrics that have a deep meaning towards the artist but may not seem like anything towards the listener. Song writers pour their heart and emotions into these songs that are listened to daily creating an identity for them, all because they phrased their words to suit them and to make them meaningful for them.
In Billy Joel’s song ‘Vienna’ encourages people to slow down and take in their surroundings. The first two lines of this song are ‘Slow down, you crazy child/ You’re so ambitious for a juvenile’. This song may speak out to the audience, but the artist may speak from experience.
Joel is 74 years old, and he may make this song to speak from experience since he could’ve viewed his life as rushed. In this case, he speaks for himself but shares his experience with the listeners of this song, wanting everyone to not rush through living their lives, and appreciate everything that they have, which he might have not done.
In this song, he seems apologetic, since he almost apologises for rushing his time on this planet but differently with the use of the same words, it can create a completely different atmosphere compared to this song.
In this song, the right words are used throughout, and the melody is slow, representing the mood of the song, creating a beautiful piece of art. These words are phrased to represent how he feels, and when doing so, they best fit him. They create a sense of identity for him.
