‘The Scary Man’ by Anonymous

In England, near 1876, witches were believed to walk the Earth.   They were believed to be old, nobly and spiteful. Many women were put to trial due to this but most of them were not witches. However, in a rundown cottage outside of Wicken, three spiteful, old witches decided to use their power to wreak havoc across the whole of England. They wanted everyone to fear the chosen ones (witches who were chosen by the Devil himself). They made a potion so vile it caused humans to become monsters with sharp, gnarled teeth and long, poisonous claws. They would give these to people who would unknowingly drink them to become what the witches wanted. But the potion went horribly wrong. (Or exactly how the witches had planned). On the first man they went to, he transformed into one of the most feared monsters to this day. ‘The Scary Man’. He destroyed whole towns, killed everyone he saw and, even, obliterated the witches as soon as he had fulfilled his true form. England had lost an eighth of its population due to this unholy being.

Now the year is 2002, half of England’s population are hiding in whatever they can find. The rest are either dead or infected into smaller, less powerful beings of the Scary Man, which most survivors named, ‘The Thing’. If a person were to describe how horrible it was being hunted down by these brutes they’d all say the same thing, horrifying. They don’t chase you, they stalk you. Watching every movement, you make, waiting for the perfect moment to snatch you into the darkness (they are nocturnal). By the daytime they are hidden, but not completely gone.

In an old mining cave in the middle of the East Midlands, sat Robert Ford, Sally Roberts, and Tim Gates. They’ve been sitting there for more than a day due to the fact that ‘The Thing’ was prowling their area. Tim had a sniper rifle, Sally had an axe and Robert had an AK-47. They were waiting for the moment where the sun would brim in the horizon causing ‘The Thing’ to stop moving and they find a safe haven away from its blinding beam. Which is where the three could ambush it.

“Why’s it here?” Sally said slumping next to Tim.

“Maybe it smells us,” Robert whispered, still watching the cave entrance.

“No, no, no,” Tim said, sounding annoyed, “We have already smeared our bodies with oil, and if he doesn’t smell that he’ll smell the rotten stench from that old couple that it slaughtered near the tractor.”

Tim would gag slightly as the smell of them lingered through the entrance.

“Surely it’s dawn now, I swear we’ve been here for a whole day already.”

“Not yet… You hear that? -” There was a loud clash as ‘The Thing’ roared, “That’s is the sound of ‘The Thing’ still purging everything it sees.’
