James had always wanted a real friendship. When Jonathan decided to come around the corner, James thought it would be an amazing opportunity to have a chat. His wife, Mary, was sympathetic and defensive when it came to James’ friends, as the last three had been abusive. Jonathan owned a white minivan with no windows and crumbling paint, covered with phone numbers and pictures of people on the sides. “I wonder what those are?” James questioned as he approached the green front door. It opened suddenly and a tall man in a black puffy jacket stood broadly behind it. “James?” he declared, like he already knew the answer. “I’ve been told a lot about my new neighbour!”
Later on that week, they had officially become friends. Going to the park, cinema, shopping centre, and restaurants was great. Until one day. It was a Wednesday. James had memorised the date: Wednesday the 3rd of August, 2136.
Mary had taken him out to a nice meal at his favourite place, The Rusty Fork. As he picked up his glass of cherry soda, he noticed Jonathan walking in the street. Deciding to greet him, he rose from his chair and started to walk next to him. “Hi! Do you want to meet up next Tuesday?”
Jonathan looked blank and depressed. “Sorry,” he said in a low voice. “Your prescription ended on Friday. You can buy another week on my account.” Not looking back, he strolled forward and turned down a narrow alleyway.
Back in the restaurant, Mary looked sheepish and guilty. “I’m so sor—” she started, but James cut her off. “Are you for real?”
