BANG! It was dark, pitch black surrounded my fear clutched body; my voice whisked away as though it was only a leaf on the wind. My ears were pelted against by a plethora of noise. My heart beating in my chest. All sense of time dissipated into the pain. People ran, people hid; some even screamed! I didn’t realise what was happening until it was too late, the world closed in on me. Then I ran, my sister’s brown hair growing ever further away as I ran in pure desperation to get to her. She was gone, she just disappeared! My heart shattered; I was alone…
When I woke up, I was surrounded by others, none of which were her. I saw some people from school, one of the town nurses and the local baker. That’s when I heard it ‘drip, drip, drip’, the mind-numbing sound of a dripping roof. There were no windows, no door, no way out. The room started to fill with water, one drop at a time. I felt sleep start to creep in through the corners of my eye. The only thing I had left was the clothes on my back, everyone had something: whether that be their favourite teddy bear, their bracelet from a loved one or an ornament they held dear. I had nothing, no one had ever given me anything of value.
It didn’t bother me all I knew was I had my sister and that’s when I saw her. Her chestnut brown hair flowing over her favourite taupe shirt and across her innocent face. “She shouldn’t be here,” I gasped under my breath “she didn’t sign up, I did”. That’s when It dawned on me, she was my prized thing. I bolted towards one of the walls, yelling, begging for them to let her out. I was doing this for her, destroying my life so she can live hers.
I sank to the ground, my scuffed shoes creating a trench in the soft mud. I sat with my head in my hands, praying for forgiveness as the water rose to my waist. I should never have signed up; her life was being risked for my mistakes.
