The year is 2247. The world isn’t what it used to be. After the Great Collapse, when resources were lost and chaos reigned, the global governance initiative stepped in, promising order and stability. Now, humanity lives in self-contained biospheres, each meticulously managed to maximize efficiency and minimize waste. Every aspect of life is controlled, from the food we eat, to the jobs we perform. Individuality is a relic of the past, a dangerous concept that threatened the fragile balance of our existence.
I am Ella, designated Sanitation technician. My days are spent cleaning the labs, ensuring the algae corps remain free of contamination. It’s a monotonous existence, but I have never known anything else. Until recently. I have started having dreams, vivid and unsettling visions of a world outside a biosphere, a world of vast landscapes, vibrant colours and unpredictable weather. A world where people made their own choices, for better or worse.
These dreams are forbidden. The GGI monitors our activity, supressing any thoughts or emotions that deviate from approved normality. But somehow, these dreams persist, growing stronger each night. And I am not the only one. I’ve noticed other workers, their eyes, holding a strange, distant look, as if they too are glimpsing something beyond the confines of our artificial world. We communicate in whispers, sharing our forbidden dreams, our growing doubts about the GGI’s benevolent intentions.
