“The power to control people or things.” That’s how Oxford defines power. However, I don’t fully
agree. Power isn’t always about control. In my opinion, power is more about influence,
particularly through something that we all have. To me, it is a gift given to all of us.
Speech
Every human being has speech, no matter their age, social class, or language. It isn’t tied to
money or education. It is one of the few powers that we are born with. Speech enables us to
express our thoughts, challenge ideas, and connect with others. You don’t need much, just
words. That’s real power in my eyes.
As humans have progressed, the creation of the internet has allowed us to utilize this gift even
more. Now we don’t just talk face to face; we type. Words can now reach across the globe. One
post or message can influence thousands. We have started using our voices through screens,
but the power of speech remains the same.
Some people think this power to speak so freely online should come with limits. They say
speech online should be controlled because it can offend or upset people. They’d rather people
stayed quiet than risk saying the wrong thing. I don’t agree with that. Silencing people does not
solve anything. Listening does. You don’t have to agree with everything, but if we don’t talk, if
we don’t hear each other out, we hit a standstill. Society does not move forward by avoiding
difficult discussions.
It is a power we all share. Use it. Speak clearly.
That’s power, the ability to influence through what you do.
