Words. Word power. The power to express whatever your heart desires, whenever and however
your heart desires. These words create a sense of meaning, a sense of belonging. A belonging to
one meaning, right? But they don’t. Words can mean whatever you intend them to mean. Kind,
persuasive, empowering, whatever it is, words have the power to express it.
Songs are my favourite form of this. The way they are formulated to sound good together or
rhyme yet they still carry a deep meaning or maybe a few..
“Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly” Blackbird by the
Beatles is an exceptional example for this; the noun Blackbird (also the title of the song) may
suggest the song is about real blackbird. This is also suggested with the use of the motif and
imagery of birds with the use of words such as ‘wings’ and ‘fly’. However, the song is actually
about a person growing from their past self as they are learning to ‘fly’ with their ‘broken wings’.
Another song that expresses this is “Hey Ya!” by Outcast. This song disguises heartbreak behind a
danceable beat, making listeners sing along to emotional devastation without even realizing it.
André 3000’s clever lyrics highlight how language and rhythm can work together to explore
serious truths while remaining accessible. This is word power.
In conclusion, this shows the countless ways words can be used and how you should be weary of
what and how you say things to others as you never know the consequences or reaction your
words hold.
