‘Life as Light Amidst Grief’ by Iqra Anwar, Year 10, Plashet City of London Academy

Hope is a pathetic little thing.
However, as I feel it, I sway to its pathetic tune.
I look out across the pale blue sea, across what many would call a beautiful lagoon.

Here my grief ferments; where it consumes me as it slowly cements.
Like vines that wrap around my heart and pull,
I gasp for breath, though there’s a gaping hole.
It keeps air from my lungs, any chance of reprieve.
Now, I’m empty and broken, having given in just to grieve.

A familiar hum sounds and hands begin to shake,
my heart twists to knots, my eyes beginning to rake.
My love approaches – the night like their cover,
as I gaze adoringly upon my lover.

I look around for something to awaken me – for surely I dreamt?
the endless childhood memories pacing my mind free of rent.
I hold out my arm to this divine gent,
and cherish his hand’s weight upon the arm I have lent.

As he rises his head, my hope ignites,
but what I see before me is worthy of fright.
His once bronze skin is pale, as thin as his body and just as frail.
His eyes so hollow ; abyss of onyx,
so deep and dark where even the devil doesn’t follow,

He says something beautiful, something meant for me,
something I know my love wanted for me.
He tells me to live, and so live I shall,
His voice so rich, it catches me in its thrall.

His voice so long lingered, I breathed in its sillage,
so rich and potent, I swallowed in his message.

A ray of sunlight pierces his ethereal eyes,
and his chapped up lips crack into a smile.
I reach out to touch it, to feel it beneath my fingertips,
but as I reach out, he slips away,
leaving only the wind’s kiss.
It whips back my hair, and time seems to slip,
like sand from my grasp, like the gasp from my lips.

I know what comes next, and I’m afraid to let go,
but life is to live and to live is to move on.

The dawn sun rises and he dips his head,
and all questions leave me as if I understood what he said.
The sunrise paints the sky a beautiful red,
as I leave my sorrow in the past, allowing it to shed.

I fall to my knees in admiration of its elegance;
What blessing, pray tell, in all its benevolence,
has managed to pull me from my sea of negligence?

You’re given the choice, and so I hope you’ll choose life,
I hope you’ll see reason and let go of this strife.
These colours, these aromas, these endless tides and waves,
hold all that which heals, and all that we crave.

Because if your love is gone, I promise you this;
they’d want to see you happy and flourish and live.

And since life is to live and to live is to move on,
let go of this ache, this constant sense of loss,
And push past this sorrow to look forward to tomorrow.
