Eating the eggs and bacon that was ready for me the minute I walked downstairs, I started to think about the time when eggs and bacon was a treat that Mother would only make if it was my birthday. I remember how I would wake her up in the morning when I was 6 years old “Mother, mother, It’s my birthday!” because I was so excited about the treat that she would meticulously prepare for me. I remember her spending an hour of the time in the morning that she would usually be working making sure my birthday treat was perfect. When my mother died I told myself that I was going to find a family and keep the birthday breakfast treat an ongoing tradition. Now, I wake up every morning to the smell of freshly cooked bacon sizzling in a pan with sausages and eggs sunny-side up placed on a piece of perfectly golden toast.
Mother wouldn’t believe me now if I told her what houses can do. I don’t have to cook, clean, turn on the lights, or even close drawers and cupboards. My whole house is automated to do things for me, the house just does everything itself. There was a time when humans had to work, humans had to work to pay for food, water and shelter to stay alive. If I went back 300 years to tell my mother that I don’t have to work to stay alive anymore, she would tell me that I’m being absurd. She wouldn’t believe that I am 300 years old. She would ask how, why. I’m starting to think that the eternal life chip given to me 250 years ago is starting to affect me.
“Are you for real?” she would ask me. I’m not sure what I would reply with. Maybe this is not real. Maybe the artificial intelligence didn’t exceed human control and I’m just part of a story. A twisted, messed up, scary story.
We should have listened all those years ago, when AI was being overused on homework and creating images and videos for people to laugh at. We should have listened to the very few people trying to stop the use of the tech sent from hell. Every interaction we had with an AI bot just made them smarter.
There is no escaping them now. I can never escape.
