‘Are You for Real’ by Oliver Edgeley, age 14, Year 9, Thomas Clarkson Academy

I woke up to the sight of balloons covering my bedroom, confetti scattered everywhere, and loud music echoing through the house. Confused but excited, I rushed downstairs where my entire family suddenly shouted, “SURPRISE!” The room erupted with cheers, and a huge smile instantly spread across my face. I was so shocked that I could barely get my words out. The only thing I managed to say was, “Are you serious?”

I dashed toward my family, hugging them tightly with excitement. Then they pointed toward a beautifully wrapped present sitting in the middle of the room. It sparkled under the lights, tied with a large red ribbon. My mind raced with possibilities. Could it really be what I had wanted?

Without wasting another second, I tore the wrapping paper open.

It was the newest drone model — the exact one I had always wanted. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was perfect. I thought the day couldn’t get any better.

Then my dad, holding his morning coffee, grinned and said, “Go outside and test out your new drone.”

I sprinted outside at full speed, weaving around chairs as if I were dodging football players. But as soon as I reached the garden, I froze. Sitting on the grass was another enormous present. I turned back toward my family, who were all filming my reaction, and shouted once again, “Are you serious?!”

I stared at the giant box, trying to guess what could possibly be inside. My mum laughed and encouraged me to open it. Carefully setting my drone down, I skipped over to the gift, wondering how this day could possibly improve any further.

The second I ripped the paper away, a bright red shine reflected directly into my eyes.

“No way… is that a bike?”

Right in front of me stood a brand-new red bicycle, gleaming brightly in the sunlight. I was completely speechless. Turning toward my family in disbelief, I repeated, “Are you serious?”

My parents cheered loudly as if they were celebrating at a football match. I stood frozen in shock, unable to process everything happening around me.

Then suddenly… everything went black.

A few hours later, I slowly woke up in a hospital bed. My head felt heavy as questions flooded my mind. How did I get here? What happened?

Just then, my family walked into the room.

“Mum… why am I in hospital?” I asked weakly.

“Honey, you fainted from shock,” she explained with a laugh. “I guess it just proves how much you loved your presents.”

“I guess so,” I sighed, still confused about how I had actually passed out.

Then Mum smiled again and added, “Well… you still have more presents waiting for you at home.”

My jaw dropped instantly.

“ARE YOU SERIOUS?!”
