‘Are you for real?’ by Neve Cunningham, Year 10, Penwortham Girls’ High School

The blue light fades, the screens go dark,

The government has made its mark.

No TikTok trends, no Insta grid,

They locked the gates and flipped the lid.

From London down to Sydney’s shores,

They’re sealing up the digital doors.

At fifteen years, we’re locked outside,

With nowhere left to scroll or hide.

You tell us that you’re “saving youth,”

But let’s be honest with the truth:

Are you for real? You think a ban

Will change the nature of a man?

You think a clever, modern kid

Won’t find a path that you forbid?

A basic proxy or VPN,

And suddenly we’re back again.

You want a world like ninety-four,

With kids outside the kitchen door?

You think we’ll go and climb a tree,

Reclaiming lost sweet infancy?

Instead, we’re staring at the wall,

Deactivated, stripped of all.

Our group chats died, our networks broke,

You treated childhood like a joke.

Are you for real? The corporate greed

Is where you should have sown the seed.

The algorithms feed the spike,

The endless scroll, the toxic like.

Fix how the heavy platforms play,

Don’t throw the whole pipeline away.

You banned the kids, but left the beast,

And reality hasn’t changed the least.
