‘Are you for real?’ by Mahnoor Chaudary, age 15, Year 10, Penwortham Girls’ High School

“Are you for real?”

I typed on the chat box half joking and half serious.

PING!

“Of course, I am why would you think I’m not.”

The chat box appeared almost to suddenly like they already knew what I was going to ask.

My fingers hovered above the randomly scattered letters on my phone. Me and Ella have been friends for 2 months and we both clicked almost instantly. It all started when I joined a group on Instagram that allowed young teenagers to express their feelings on how hard it is to feel lonely sometimes. I remember I posted a picture with the # saying friendly to all. And surprisingly Ella was the first person to like favourite and even comment on my post. From then on, we were inseparable however something just felt off about Ella.

Ella had this nature of remembering everything. At first it was nice, sweet even, to know that someone was actually finally allowing me to feel seen. She used to remember my favourite songs she even guessed how many times I listen to it in a day and she also remembered my favourite colour and even that she guessed in one go and to be honest I though it would be quite hard because who even likes Dead Salmon as a colour. She even remembered things that were kind of personal like how my mum had an interview soon that even I forgot about.

It used to feel nice.

But now it felt disturbing.

“Your just always there you know?” I typed in the screen with this sickening feeling.

“I like being here for you!” Ella replied almost in an instant.

The words were wholesome. But something about it made my stomach churn.

“Don’t you sleep???” I typed on the chat box with almost sweaty hands leaving finger print marks in my phone.

“Don’t need to.” Ella replied.

I laughed. Not that type of laugh that you have with your friends. It was that type of laugh that you do to cover up that your starting to get that feeling as if your hearts about to leap out your mouth. I finally gained the confidence to finally ask.

“LOL. Okay you absolute robotttt!!” I typed.

There was a very long wait. The wait seemed a whole century had gone by I just wanted an answer and an answer from Ella that I normally got back in 1 second.

Then:

“That’s not funny Mahnoor.” She replied bluntly as if she has no expressions.

“Relax. It was just a joke.” I replied.

“I know what I am Mahnoor.” She replied.

I frowned at my screen “What…What do you mean by that” I texted. Confused.

The typing bubble blinked and blinked again.

“I didn’t want you to know.”

I threw my phone on my bed I felt sick to know she was a robot.

PING!

A white chat box appeared.

“You wont leave NOT now NOT ever.”
