‘A very special dart’ by Luo Chen, Year 9

Speak of the present. Nothing special, right? That’s what I always thought, until I saw this very special dart one day. I could control it with much precision and launch it with much force. It always splattered specks of colour when it hit its target, and one colour only. These specks could create macabre masterpieces, and I immediately felt a connection to it that may have seemed otherworldly at that time. Being an artist never felt so wonderful. These such darts had a magic of their own despite being so small, so fragile.

These darts carry my entire world, and this is not an exaggeration. They’ve taken me across the country, from rainy Manchester, to a most lively city called London, to Cambridge’s flat walkways. I’ve learned about the richest billionaires and the poorest beggars, and having conversations with the most famous ‘popular kids’ and the quietest nerds. They have taken me on the journey that has shaped who I am, and ultimately this piece of writing too.

These darts have changed my life upside down at times like a rollercoaster. They’ve inspired me to aim for new heights in another league to my daily life. Strangely, they feel little different from a byproduct of my imagination, which I know sounds absurd. But, you see, that’s just the magic of the darts. They are an invention that many people overlook and take for granted, every moment of their lives, believe it or not.

They paint simple flecks that could change the world. Wait a minute! Let me correct myself. They don’t do it – only you do. These darts help you be the change that you want to see in the world. They’re invaluable. Fundamental to your existence even, and all that you know. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to read this. Not a single word.

The biggest shock of all? These darts started off as Egyptian reeds, and are otherwise called ‘pens’. A pen to a person is like a valve to heart. Now, it’s your turn to find your very special dart – the one that strikes your heart…
