‘A government that Scares’ by Sofia Nahavandi-Nejad, Wolverhampton Girls High School

A government that Scares

We are humans, voices cursed

Undying urge to do the worst

We are humans, the ugliest creation

Damned to hell, sans salvation.

Presidents, PMs, figureheads of ‘democracy’

Dependent on policy as if it were prophecy

Hell breaks loose at international conventions

As people patiently preserve apprehensions.

Taunts are tossed, then follow curses unresisted

Slurs no one even knew existed

Insults

Threats

Ridicules

Slander

Violence

Shatter all prayers for alliance

For after every mundane proposal

The big red button, at submissive disposal

Glares and flickers in our leaders’ eyes

One word tips off the tongue and everyone dies –

PRESS. PRESS. PRESS. PRESS. PRESS.

It rings through their minds, it rings through their ears

Unleashing a frenzy of everyone’s fears

Every altercation and every event

Is one word away from complete descent.

Boisterous bickering between governing boards

With resistance rising, burgeoning hoards

For all too infatuated with their own disarray

An unnoticed awakening is crafting its way

Through a kid’s coloured crayons

Through a questioner’s quill

Through a linguist’s lips

Through a graffitist’s canvas

Through a doctor’s stethoscope

Through a judge’s gavel

Through a voice like yours.

Word power is a blessing we all possess

Triumphing choice over duress

A strength so gargantuan, not to be compared

Only to be cared and only to be shared.

For we are humans, voices blessed

Tongues of gold and speech our crest

We are humans, beauty in tons

Adam’s blessed daughters and sons.
